How to make friends as an adult

Adult friendship is hard for a reason that has nothing to do with you. School, university, and early jobs did the work for you: they put the same people in the same room, week after week, until something took root. Take those structures away and you're left doing on purpose what used to happen by accident.

The good news is that the ingredients are known, and they're small.

1. Optimise for repeat contact, not chemistry

Real friendship is built on hours, not vibes. A single great conversation with a stranger rarely turns into anything. The same person, seen every Thursday for three months, almost always does.

Pick one recurring thing — a run club, a class, a volunteer shift, a board game night — and go often enough that people start expecting you. Consistency beats charisma.

2. Be the one who suggests the next thing

Most adults are lonely and waiting for someone else to make the move. Be the one who does. "Coffee next week?" is a full sentence. So is "We're going for a walk on Sunday, come."

You'll get turned down sometimes. It's not personal. Keep asking.

3. Lower the bar for what counts

A friend isn't only someone you'd call at 3am. A friend is also the neighbour who waves, the person at the gym who knows your name, the colleague you get lunch with. Those weak ties are where deeper friendships come from.

4. Say the honest thing

Friendship deepens when someone tells the truth first. "I've been lonely lately." "I don't really know anyone here." "I'd love more people in my life." It feels risky. It almost always lands.

5. Go where people already are

Local run clubs, community gardens, choirs, climbing gyms, book clubs, language exchanges, faith communities, parent groups, hobby meetups. The activity is the excuse; the people are the point.
